LOR has been providing clothing and necessities for Lowcountry children transitioning to foster care since 2003.  In 2017, LOR’s Distribution Center provided over 3,200 children with two-weeks-worth of clothing, shoes, coats, toiletries, books, stuffed animals and school supplies.   LOR continues to grow this important work each year, with an emphasized effort to reach rural children in 2018.

In addition to the work in our Distribution Center, LOR holds quarterly children’s events, providing social and recreational enrichment opportunities for hundreds of children in foster care.  This summer we prepared for our annual Beach Day where we took up to 150 children out to Folly Beach for a day of sun and fun.

LOR also holds life skills classes and summer camps, aimed at preparing foster youth for success after foster care.  LOR’s Foster the Future program focuses on job/career readiness, academic and leadership skills, financial literacy and college preparation.

LOR’s Foster the Future Summer Camp took place for three weeks in June, with 60 participants from local group homes and foster placements.  The camp was a great success and we are already working hard to grow and improve the experience for children in care in 2019.

Below is a story of one young lady that LOR staff and volunteers had the pleasure of meeting…

Zoe is a 10-year old girl who participated in LOR’s first week of Camp Foster the Future.  She is currently living with a foster parent, while her twin brothers live in a group home.  She has pig-tails, a warm smile, a quick wit and natural leadership.  Although you can often find her rolling her eyes at the antics of her younger brothers, you can tell she is very glad that they are back together while at camp, even if it is just for a week.

Besides enjoying the company of her brothers, Zoe is taking advantage of everything else that camp has to offer.  She is the first person to share after a reflective activity about emotions and another one on goal setting.  She enthusiastically participates in the group collage at Redux Art Studio.  She makes friends with the other girls in the group and jokes around with the Citadel camp counselors.

Through Camp Foster the Future, Zoe and the other 60 participants (age 9-18) are exposed to life skills lessons like conflict resolution, teamwork, healthy living and career development (and maybe a dance party here and there).  Older participants will learn interview skills and resume writing, as well as money management, college planning (the FAFSA financial aid form is HARD!) and other skills for independent living.  While being fun and interactive, the camp aims at preparing young people for a happy and healthy future.

The statistics are not in Zoe’s favor…1 in 4 aged out foster children in SC become homeless or teen moms and 40% become incarcerated.  One-third report no job by age 21, not even part-time.  LOR’s goal is to grow Camp Foster the Future until every Lowcountry child in foster care receives the life skills training needed to be a confident and resourceful adult.  With support and mentorship, we know Zoe and her brothers will succeed in school and make a positive impact on the world.

Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic
, a free clinic serving uninsured adults who live or work on Johns, James, and Wadmalaw Islands, opened their brand new, 7,000 sq ft medical facility early this spring. It is estimated that the new clinic will be able to treat up to 600 patients per month. Those who are eligible for free, on-going health care at the free clinic live or work on Johns, James or Wadmalaw Island, are uninsured, and make $24, 280 or less annually as a single member household (or add $8,640 per additional family member within a household.) The clinic was founded in 2008 by Doctors Arthur S. Booth and Charlie Davis, operating on the Volunteers In Medicine model of providing free health care. For more information, visit www.bifmc.org or call 843-266-9800.

The current location resides behind the former building, now at 3226 Maybank Highway, Building C, on Johns Island. “We have really come full circle now as a clinic,” shares clinic director, Brenda Falls, on what would be the 10th anniversary of the clinic first opening its doors. “We started out as just a small primary care office treating patients with acute health issues, but it was really the vision of our co-founders that we would be a primary medical home for years to come. This space is a dream come true, and our volunteers can now deliver more efficient care for our patients.”

Since 2008, the clinic has met the health and wellness needs of over 4000 area patients in need, treating and managing chronic diseases and referring to 19 offsite specialists in the lowcountry. Roper St. Francis has provided over 1.6 million in-kind services for the clinic in 2017 alone. Now, the physical space the crew at BIFMC operates out of can reflect the high quality care their patients have been receiving for years. For volunteers and staff, the large new facility will not only create more opportunity and space to provide care for those in the community without health insurance, but also demonstrates to patients that they are cared about. “I hope that our patients feel that they are being treated the way they should be – with dignity and respect,” adds Falls. “In so many ways, people have misconceptions about what a free clinic is, and this is an expanded opportunity to continue to treat our uninsured community with the high quality care and compassion they deserve.”

About Mo Isom

There are two things in life I know for sure. One is that we are sinners who can’t save ourselves. The other is that we were never meant to.

I know what it feels like to be the wandering heart who can’t seem to find home. I know what it feels like to learn every hard lesson every hard way. To struggle with finding identity—for the masks we wear on the outside and the accolades and successes to somehow still not feel like enough. I know what it feels like to suffer—from an eating disorder to a parent’s suicide, to a horrific car accident—crippling adversity has been the norm, not the exception, in my story. Depression, anxiety, perfectionism. Promiscuity, sin struggles, bondage to hidden shame. Those were all of my ingredients to a life that should have been defined by brokenness. A life that should have been limited by the fractured pieces I couldn’t fix on my own.

But I also know what it feels like for a Savior to crash into our sin. For a King to call us redeemed. For a Carpenter to rebuild our brokenness into a new creation, crafted to bring Heaven to Earth with the time we have and through the breath that fills our lungs. I know a King who makes hopeless things holy. I know a Savior named Jesus—who wrecks and redefines everything.

The purpose of my life is to point to the cross, and to encourage as many souls as I can reach to set their eyes on the One who took it in their place. I’m a wife to Jeremiah, a mom to Auden and Asher, a speaker, an author, and the world’s most inconsistent blogger. But above all things I’m a Holy Spirit-filled daughter of God Almighty who isn’t afraid to speak bold, raw, courageous truth soaked in the love and grace of Jesus—the One who makes all things new.

Mi Isom Biography

Mo Isom is the New York Times Bestselling author of Wreck My Life: Journeying from Broken to Bold and the author of Sex, Jesus, and the Conversations the Church Forgot (set to release 3/6/18). She is also a nationally sought after speaker, a popular faith-based blogger, a former All-American soccer goalkeeper and the first female to have trained with and tried out for an SEC men’s football team. She is widely recognized as a powerful female voice rising up for her generation, as her unique personal story and athletic endeavors have provided her with a platform to challenge, encourage, and equip others to live boldly, despite their circumstances. Having faced great personal tragedy— including battling an eating disorder, overcoming the suicide of her father, and surviving a horrific car accident—Mo is passionate about speaking on a wide variety of topics and is able to connect with men and women of all ages and demographics.

An All-American goalkeeper, Mo competed for the LSU Women’s Soccer team from 2008 to 2011. In her time as a Tiger, she led her team to three SEC West Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. She is the LSU AllTime Goalkeeper Record Holder (43 wins, 30 shutouts, 0.86 goals against average), as well as the #3 SEC All-Time Shutout Record Holder. Throughout her career, she trained with the U.S. Women’s National Team, was honored as National Player of the Week, honored three times as SEC Defensive Player of the Week, appeared on ESPN SportsCenter Top-10 Plays after famously scoring a 90-yard goal, and was featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces In the Crowd”, amongst many other honors.

The Broadcast Journalism major was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in ‘08, ‘10 and ‘11. In 2011 she was also named LSU Living Female Athlete of the Year, a Glamour Magazine Top10 College Women Nominee, a LOWES Senior C.L.A.S.S Award Finalist, and was the first ever athlete to be crowned LSU’s Homecoming Queen. The following year she was featured on the cover of 225 Magazine and named, amongst political leaders, social activists, and influential businessmen, as a “Person To Watch” in 2012.

Mo is also the first female to ever tryout for an SEC, Division I football team. From January of 2011 to August of 2012, Mo trained with the LSU men’s football team as a place kicker. While the athletic endeavor garnered national attention— including an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, ESPN, CBS, Fox, and countless other television, radio, and digital platforms—Isom’s focus and passion were derived from her desire to live boldly and pursue the stirrings of her heart, no matter the odds.

While the athletic and personal accolades have been humbling acknowledgements of Mo’s driven work ethic, the highs and lows she has faced in her young life have, most importantly, shaped her into a woman of character, strength and purpose. Mo was the recipient of LSU’s Eye of the Tiger Award, as well as nationally recognized as The Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement Award. It is her heart to inspire hope in those who feel hopeless, encourage strength in those who feel bound by life’s circumstances, and empower this generation to live life with integrity, character, and passion.

Mo’s currently speaks to audiences across the country, as well as internationally. Her honest, captivating and thought-provoking speaking style serves to both challenge and motivate listeners to overcome life’s adversities and live boldly. Her videos and writings on her personal website (moisom.com) garner millions of viewers and she is regularly featured on MGM’s online platform, LightWorkers.com. Mo’s first book, Wreck My Life: Journeying from Broken to Bold released in August 2016 and quickly debuted as the #11 New York Times Bestseller in the Sports category. She lives in Atlanta with her husband, Jeremiah Aiken, and daughters, Auden and Asher.
